A same-day crown is a permanent tooth-colored crown that I design, mill, and cement in a single visit at our Jersey City office, usually in about two hours. There is no temporary crown to wear for two weeks, no second appointment, and no goopy impression. We use a small camera to take a digital scan of your tooth, design the crown on a screen with you sitting right there, and then a milling machine in our in-house lab carves the crown out of a single block of ceramic while you wait.
This is one of the most common questions I get from patients in Jersey City and Hoboken, so I want to walk you through exactly what happens, what the crown is made of, and what to expect on the day you come in for it.

What is a same-day crown?
A same-day crown is a full ceramic crown made and placed in one appointment using CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing). Instead of sending a physical mold of your tooth to an outside lab and waiting two to three weeks while you wear a temporary, I capture a digital scan of your tooth, design the crown on a computer, and our in-house milling unit carves it out of a solid block of ceramic. You leave with the permanent crown bonded in place the same day.
In my practice, I use this approach for most single-tooth crowns when the case fits. It works well for back teeth that need a full-coverage crown after a large filling, a fracture, or a root canal. For front teeth where the shade and shape need careful artistry, I still sometimes recommend a traditional lab-fabricated crown because the layering of color is different. We talk through what makes sense for your specific tooth at the consult.
How long does a same-day crown take to make?
Plan on about two hours from start to finish. Here is how that breaks down in our office:
- Numbing and prep: 30 to 45 minutes. We get your tooth comfortable, then I shape the tooth so the crown will fit cleanly over it.
- Digital scan: 5 to 10 minutes. A small wand-shaped camera passes over your teeth and captures the shape in 3D on a screen. No tray of putty, no gagging.
- Design: 10 to 15 minutes. I design the crown on the computer with you right there. We match the shape and size to your other teeth and the way you bite.
- Milling: 15 to 30 minutes. The milling unit in our lab carves the crown out of a ceramic block. You can watch it happen, work on your laptop with our chairside Wi-Fi, or just relax with the weighted blanket and a coffee from our Starbucks bar.
- Glazing or polish + cementation: 20 to 30 minutes. The crown gets a final finish, I check the fit and your bite, then we bond it permanently to your tooth.
Most patients are surprised how fast it goes. The total time on the chair is similar to a long filling appointment, except you walk out with the finished crown.
What are same-day crowns made of?
The two materials I use most often for same-day crowns are lithium disilicate (a strong tooth-colored ceramic, sometimes called by the brand name e.max) and zirconia (an even harder ceramic that is excellent for back teeth and patients who grind). Both are bio-compatible, free of metal, and look like a natural tooth.
- Lithium disilicate is my first choice for most front-and-back single crowns. It has a beautiful translucency that mimics real enamel and bonds extremely well to tooth structure.
- Zirconia is what I reach for on molars that take heavy biting force, or for patients with a history of cracking ceramic. It is one of the strongest dental materials available.
Here is what the research says about how long these crowns last. Rauch and colleagues followed chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate crowns for over 15 years and reported an 80.1% survival rate at that point (Rauch et al., Clinical Oral Investigations, 2023). That means at the 15-year mark, four out of five of those crowns were still functioning in the mouth. Older chairside CAD/CAM data going back to the 1990s reviewed by Fasbinder in JADA also showed strong long-term clinical performance (Fasbinder, J Am Dent Assoc, 2006). The short version: a well-made same-day ceramic crown is a real long-term restoration, not a compromise on durability.
How is a same-day crown actually made, step by step?
This is the part most patients are curious about, so I want to be specific. Here is the full workflow I use at Limitless Dental for a same-day crown.
Step 1: Numbing and tooth preparation
I get the tooth numb so you feel pressure but no sharpness. Then I shape the tooth so the crown has the right thickness of ceramic to be strong (usually about 1 to 1.5 mm of clearance around the tooth). If there is decay or an old filling underneath, I remove that first and rebuild the foundation with a bonded build-up material before scanning.
Step 2: Digital scan with an intraoral camera
Instead of putting a tray of impression material in your mouth, I pass a small camera wand over your prepped tooth and the teeth on either side. Within a few minutes the screen shows a full color 3D model of your bite. No goop, no gagging, no setting time. The accuracy on the digital scan is also better than a traditional impression for the kind of fit a CAD/CAM crown needs.
Step 3: Design on the computer
The crown is designed on a CAD program, using the scan as the starting point. The software proposes a crown shape based on the neighboring teeth, and I refine it (contour, contact points with the teeth next to it, how it meets your opposite teeth when you bite). On a front tooth I spend more time on shape and length to match your other teeth. On a back tooth I focus on the bite. This is also where the patient gets to see the design before we make it.
Step 4: Milling in our in-house lab
Once the design is approved, the milling unit takes a solid block of ceramic in the chosen shade and carves the crown out of it. You can see this happening through the lab window. For a single crown, the mill runs about 15 to 30 minutes. Because we have our own in-house Limitless Lab with three 3D printers and a milling unit, you never leave the building and we never ship anything out for this step.
Step 5: Finishing and try-in
The milled crown comes out of the unit and I check the fit on your tooth. For lithium disilicate, the crown then goes into a small furnace for a quick crystallization step that brings it to its final strength and color. For zirconia, we use a similar polish or glaze step depending on the case. I check your bite, adjust the contact points, and make sure the shade matches before we bond it.
Step 6: Bonding the crown to your tooth
I clean the prepped tooth, condition it, and bond the crown in place using a resin cement. The bond between modern ceramic and tooth structure is what makes this restoration so durable. After a final bite check and a polish, you are done. You can eat normally right away. There is no waiting period for the crown to “set.”
Are same-day crowns as good as traditional lab-made crowns?
For the right case, yes. The ceramic blocks I mill from are the same materials that high-end labs use. The fit on a digital scan is more accurate than a physical impression in most studies, because there is no distortion from the impression material or the stone model. The 15-year clinical data on chairside lithium disilicate (Rauch et al., 2023) shows survival rates in line with what you would expect from a lab-fabricated ceramic crown.
That said, there are situations where I will recommend a two-visit lab crown instead:
- Front teeth where the shade has complex layering (the kind of effect a ceramist hand-paints) that the in-office mill cannot replicate as precisely.
- Cases where you want a feldspathic porcelain crown specifically.
- Multi-unit bridges or full-arch work where the lab still has an advantage in finishing.
For a single back-tooth crown after a root canal or a large filling, a same-day crown is almost always the better experience and the better fit.
How much does a same-day crown cost in Jersey City?
Pricing for a same-day crown at Limitless Dental is in the same range as a traditional lab-fabricated crown. The actual number depends on the tooth, the material we use, and whether you have insurance. We also offer our in-house Limitless Dental Savings Plan ($549/year individual, $749/year periodontal) that includes a 50% discount on crowns and other restorative work for patients without insurance. You can see the full list of accepted plans and third-party options on our insurance and financing page. For longer-term financing we accept CareCredit, Proceed Finance, Sunbit, and Cherry.
The honest answer on cost is that I would rather give you a real number after I look at the tooth. Two molars that look identical from the outside can need very different work underneath. We always go through the full cost in your treatment plan before we start, so there are no surprises.
What should I expect after a same-day crown is placed?
You can eat and drink normally as soon as the numbing wears off. The bond is at full strength right away. Some things to know:
- Sensitivity: mild cold sensitivity for a few days is normal, especially if the tooth had a deep filling or a root canal. It almost always settles down within a week.
- Bite check: if it feels high or off when you chew, call us. A 2-minute bite adjustment fixes it.
- Cleaning: brush and floss normally. The crown’s edges meet your tooth at the gum line, and good hygiene there is what protects the crown long-term.
- Avoiding damage: ceramic crowns are strong, but they can still chip on extremely hard objects (ice, popcorn kernels, hard candy). The same things that would chip a natural tooth will chip a crown.
Frequently asked questions
Will I need a temporary crown with a same-day crown?
No. That is one of the main reasons patients choose this option. The whole point of a same-day crown is that there is no two-week gap with a plastic temporary that can come off, leak, or stain. You walk out with the permanent crown bonded in place.
Is the fit of a same-day crown as accurate as a lab crown?
Yes, often more accurate. The digital scan I take is more precise than a traditional impression material. The milling unit cuts the crown directly from the digital design, so there are fewer steps where small errors can build up. When the case fits this workflow, the fit is excellent.
Can a same-day crown be used on a front tooth?
Sometimes, yes. For a single front tooth replacement where the surrounding teeth have a fairly uniform color, a milled lithium disilicate crown can look beautiful. For cases with complex shade layering or where we are matching one front tooth to a complicated set of neighbors, I will often recommend a porcelain veneer or a lab crown instead. We talk through what makes sense at the consult.
How long do same-day crowns last?
Modern chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate crowns have 15-year survival rates around 80% in long-term clinical follow-up (Rauch et al., Clinical Oral Investigations, 2023). With good hygiene and regular cleanings, you can reasonably expect a same-day ceramic crown to last 10 to 15+ years. The biggest factor in how long any crown lasts is how well you keep the gum line around it clean.
Does insurance cover a same-day crown?
Most dental insurance plans cover same-day crowns the same way they cover traditional crowns. The procedure code is the same. Our front desk team verifies your benefits before your appointment and tells you what to expect out of pocket. If you do not have insurance, the Limitless Dental Savings Plan covers same-day crowns at a 50% in-office discount.
